Pivot is a powerful tool that combines funding and collaboration opportunities for researchers and graduate students across all disciplines.  Formerly separate Community of Science (COS) databases, (COS Funding Opportunities, COS Expertise and COS Scholar Universe), Pivot is pre-populated with Northeastern researcher profiles (and others) and matches them to current funding opportunities in the COS database. This allows users to search for a funding opportunity and instantly view matching faculty from inside or outside Northeastern. Searching by name will link to matching funding opportunities.  Pivot also allows individuals to create unique funding searches, choose to receive weekly emails based upon those searches, and track relevant opportunities.

Visit the Pivot YouTube page for training webinars and FAQs.

  • A personal Northeastern Pivot Training Session can be accommodated upon request. Training sessions will be conducted by Luesoni Kuck, STEM Librarian. You may schedule a training session by contacting her at l.kuck@northeastern.edu or x5322.

Please note that as of October 2021, Pivot now offers Northeastern University SSO login.  If you have previously created an account with Pivot, you can merge that account with the SSO login option.  Please see instructions below.

Using Pivot

Access Pivot at: https://pivot.proquest.com/

To create a new account:

  • Visit the above link
  • Select “Create an Account”
  • On the next page, select “Use Institutional Login Credentials”
  • Select Northeastern University from the “Choose your Institution” drop down menu
  • Once selected, click “Create my account”
  • You will then be redirected to the “myNortheastern” login page
  • Once logged in you will be redirected back to Pivot and prompted to enter your full name and institutional email to complete the set up process

To merge an existing Pivot account with your Northeastern SSO login account:

  • Follow the above steps to create a new account
  • Once you are logged in with your myNortheastern credentials and redirected to the Pivot account set up page, enter your full name and the email that your current Pivot account is set up with. If you enter a Northeastern email address that is not associated with your current Pivot account, the two accounts will not merge.
  • Once you enter the email address and complete the account set up, a prompt will appear above the fields.  The prompt will say that Pivot has identified you have an account already existing with that email address, and will give a link to merge the accounts.
  • Once clicked, you will receive an email with a link to merge accounts.  Follow the prompts to complete the account merge.

Pivot creates faculty profiles automatically by mining the internet for publications and generates a funding search based upon this information once the profile has been claimed. To claim a profile:

  • If there is a “Claim profile” link after logging in, your profile has not been claimed
  • Click the “Claim profile” link and select the profile that is yours by clicking “this is me.” If no results display, click “suggest a scholar”
  • You can see a funding search tailored to your profile once it is available by clicking the “Advisor” tab on the home page
  • Detailed instructions can be found here.
  • Select “Search – for funding or scholars” from the home page
  • Choose advanced search to select your search perimeters to narrow the opportunities that are returned based on your keyword search
    • Helpful search/requirement criteria to minimize the search results: US Citizenship or Residency; Academic Institution under Requirements
    • Other helpful criteria to use: Funding Amount, Sponsor, Deadline, Funding Type; Activity Location
  • To save the query for later use, choose “Save Query” on the results page
