TIER 3: Institutional Strategic Priorities
Interested applicants must consult with the relevant Research Development contact for their college (see list on this page) and the Office of Research Development (resdev@northeastern.edu) as early as possible and before submitting a TIER 3 application.
This competitive program provides support for development of broad, multidisciplinary research initiatives and centers that will position the university to become a national leader in an emerging or sustained area of research that responds to a national or societal need. Successful applicants will receive planning grants of up to $150,000 from the SVPR (2/3) and participating Dean(s) (1/3).
Applications for TIER 3 funding should present the following:
- Identify opportunities and assess competition
- Develop plan to establish Northeastern’s capacity to lead in the field of study:

- Define actions to be undertaken: for example, developing relationships with internal and external collaborators, industry contacts, and program officers, developing collaborative research, etc
- Demonstrate capacity: sponsoring symposia, conferences, joint publications
